Lame New Cingular Commercial

Pet Peeve #85: Illogical commercials…The new Cingular Wireless commercial where two guys sing The Clash’s “Rock the Casbah” incorrectly. Now, I’ve been guilty at one time or another of messing up the lyrics to songs, i.e. “excuse me, while I kiss this guy” in Jimi Hendrix’s “Purple Haze.” But it’s one thing to screw up a few words in the song, and another to totally slaughter the words in the song when the words being slaughtered are the title. That’s just unacceptable. The two guys start singing “Rock the Casbah” just seconds after one of them downloads it to his phone. I just don’t see how anyone could think the the words are “Lock the Cashbox” much less “Stop the Catbox” when he’s obviously just downloaded the damn song as “Rock the Casbah” from his computer! Tell me, where’s the logic in that? Doesn’t make any lick of sense, I tell’s ya. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have to catch the episode I Tivo’ed of my favorite new comedy of the season starring the hil-are-ious Racy Gorgon, Dirty Rocks.

    Dude — I know personally of at least one person who misheard the lyrics as “rock the cashbox” and believed that to be the lyric for many years… In fact, he only discovered the true lyrics in the late 90s — granted, we laughed at him for being an idiot, but hey, that’s life. I do agree that this commercial is a bit dumb, I mean it’s written right there on his phone… Anyhow, it made me laugh because “rock the cashbox” had been somewhat of an inside joke for years…. Why am I even telling you this? Stupid internet — it makes the most pointless and totally irrelevant communication possible.

  2. Maciej–I know what you mean…I once knew someone who thought for years that CCR’s “Bad Moon Rising” went “…there’s a bathroom on the right…” It happens to the best of us. Thanks for even bothering to respond to my rant. I’d gladly give you a penny for your thoughts by paypal if you give me your email…on second thought, scratch that…I need my milk money. And don’t speak ill of pointless and irrelevant communication, for they are the lifeblood of the internets…and of lifes. so whatever tomorrow brings, I welcome your pointless and irrelevant communication with open arms and open ears, yeah…(end of monologue) (close curtains).

    the question most intelligent people must be asking (if the ad was based on a real event), is, how did they find the song in the first place if they didn’t even know the song title? The ad makes no sense! Getting the lyrics wrong within the song is one thing, but to get the actual title wrong makes the ad look stupid & the person who thought up the idea.

    Yes it was stupid that the guys downloaded the title “Rock the Casbah” only to screw up the words in the song; the people who made the commercial should have thought it out a little more…but do you know how many people have no clue what the lyrics to that song actually are??? I LMFAO when I saw the commercial….I can SO see myself singing away in my car to the tune of “the beats had some cataracts” and so on….Rock on Cingular!

    I think the point was that these guys were pretty stupid. Why not make them really stupid and mess up the words that happen to be the title of the song they just downloaded. It was supposed to be stupid-funny, not a doctoral dissertation on the sociological effects of using cell phones with popular music.
